architizer: A 250 long by 18 meters wide plot perpendicular to the sea, with an arable area, leading from the beach itself to some old ruins, canes and lemon trees.

The house for the photographer II is at the end of the plot. Constructed on a platform 70 cm high above the level of natural floodable ground, three small irregular floor plan and section buildings dialogue through an empty space with fleeting views.

A palm grove with 52 Washingtonian palm trees leads us from the beach to the house.

The breakdown of the volumes is due to the conditions of the landscape, to the construction, and to the light which suggests a Picasso painting that was painted in the area and which is currently in the Picasso Museum in Paris.

The empty centre is thus converted into the main area of the house: a tense area, made up geometrically in its upper part by means of the high opaque bodies of the various pavilions, and on the floor plan up to a height of 2.10 meters in a continuous area connecting the various shady interior areas with view of the sea, the plant background and the living areas above the platform.

The play on volume decomposition reminds us of the Picasso cubist composition.

DPRK: The Land Of Whispers (North Korea Travel Documentary) (2013)

North Korea lies somewhere between a 1930′s Soviet Union frozen in time and a dark, futuristic vision of society… as imagined back in the 70′s.

“Land of Whispers” invites you to visit arguably the most unique and isolated travel destination in the world – not to criticize, but to observe and listen. Aside from usual highlights such as Pyongyang or Arirang, this unique one-man documentary brings you to areas such as Chongjin or Wonson, still virtually unknown to even google or wikipedia. There, I attempt to pierce through the ever-present ‘national mythology’ and as much as possible, I try to connect with people – such as the waitress mesmerized by tablet computers, or a tour guide cautiously fascinated by modern pop culture.

Villa L by Powerhouse Company with RAU

Powerhouse Company and RAU: Designed to fulfil the desires and needs of a young family, Villa L is set in the woods of central Netherlands, fully oriented towards the sun and the views on the garden.

Villa L is a spatially diverse residence where every floor has its own strong identity, creating a broad spatial spectrum within a unified whole.

A young family with three children asked Powerhouse Company and RAU to design a house that would fulfill their dreams: a paradox of a house that is simple yet surprising, open yet specific, minimal yet luxurious.

Powerhouse Company, responsible for the design, resolved these contradictions with a house based on a radical differentiation of spatial experiences on three floors (of which one is subterranean). RAU embedded the sustainable strategy for the villa in the design.

Three clear levels, with three very different characters and functionalities as a basis for family life to emerge. One level is for living, a generously open ground floor. A strip of serving rooms containing storage, toilets and stairs, provides easily access to the luxuriously open living spaces. The kitchen and living room are oriented maximally to the sun and view. In close relation to this living area there are two studies located on the north side next to the entrance.

The collection of rooms on the first floor provides space for sleeping and privacy. Set in a delicate roof garden, all the bedrooms are autonomous volumes crafted in their entirety from dark wood. They work like a village of cabins, providing intimacy and privacy. Every room is like a world of its own with private views over the wooded landscape.

The curved basement is for guests, wellness and storage. The excavations allow the pool and the guest rooms to have fully glazed facades and direct access to the garden.

The house incorporates innovative sustainable measures including a hot and cold-water storage and extensive use of hidden PV cells. The basement contains a dedicated area for the high-end energy saving installations.

A house designed for the hectic life of an evolving family; fragmented yet united, plural yet whole.

The audacious structural engineer Gilbert van der Lee, also responsible for engineering Villa 1, designed the structure, including the soaring ceiling of the living room.

ODE Chair by Jolyon Yates

ODEChair also known as Breeze or Savana Rocking Chair III designed by British Jolyon Yates is a rocking chair made of Birch laminate that is in strong satin lacquer which brings out the rich wood tones and provides maximum protection whilst maintaining a simple natural finish.

The chair is a fine combination of simplicity: modern design and natural material. As it is said at ODEChair’s web side “ODE is to those that we meet and learn from on our journeys.”
