Enignum & Continuum by Joseph Walsh

Wood has a diverse set of qualities as it is hard, fibrous, a great transport of nutrients and a great valued resource in our ecosystem. This wonderful material has become Joseph Walsh‘s creative journey. A self taught designer and Irish born, Joseph Walsh expresses his passion and imagination through his work ethic and commitment to exploring the depth and potential of wood as structure, form, material, technology and ecology.

The Continuum Table explores the transition and relationship between massive eroded forms and delicate free form composition. The solid form is a reconstruction of a solid log through an assembly of thick layers which are carved into shape, the free form bursts from this into a delicate bent form composition informed by the materials elasticity.

In the Enignum series of work, I have stripped wood into thin layers, manipulating and reconstructing them into free form compositions. I then shape through these layers to reveal not only the honesty of the structure but the sculpted form which is a unique collaboration of man and material. The title derives from the Latin words Enigma (‘mystery’) and Lignum (‘wood’), for me they sum up the series: the mystery of the composition lies in the material.
