Tim Spicer Architects: Located in a tight lane way of Fitzroy the building cleverly responds to the client’s brief of a combined home studio and lock up garage. The building when viewed from the rear of the existing two story Victorian terrace resembles a concert harp in profile. A delicate skin of recycled yellow stringy bark timber battens wrap around the three compound curved beams that form the structure of the building. The distinction between inside and outside space is blurred behind the aviary like skin. It provides privacy, natural ventilation and sunlight diffusion. Though appearing enclosed the external deck and stairwell are open to the elements, allowing occupiers to experience the open air from within the building envelope. The ground floor consists of a lock up garage and a small bathroom for visitors. Timber stairs wrap up and around the inside of the curved facade to a private studio at first floor.
